Which types of studies allow processing the stay from within Spain?

Spanish immigration law allows the internal application in three main categories: 1) HIGHER EDUCATION (Art. 52.1.a): the main pathway. Includes university studies (bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at recognized institutions), university-issued own degrees granted by universities under their autonomy (for example Le Cordon Bleu linked to Universidad Francisco de Vitoria), Vocational Training Master's degrees within the FP system, and studies at international centers based in Spain leading to degrees recognized in other States. 2) SPECIALIZED HEALTH TRAINING (Art. 58): foreigners who have obtained a place in the annual selection processes for Health Sciences specialists (MIR, EIR, FIR, among others). 3) TECHNICAL APTITUDE CERTIFICATIONS (Art. 52.1.e.4º): only processable from Spain when the specific regulation governing that certification or professional qualification expressly allows it. General Spanish-language courses, non-regulated training and courses that do not fit these three categories cannot use this pathway — those require a visa from the country of origin.

Does time as a student count toward Spanish Nationality?

Time as a student counts as a "stay" and NOT as "residence." Therefore, it does not count toward the years needed for nationality (2 years for Latin Americans, 10 for others). However, it's the perfect bridge to later modify to a residence and work permit that will count.

Can I bring my family members with me?

Yes, students can apply for visas for their direct family members (spouse, domestic partner, and children under 18) to accompany them during their stay. They can legally reside, but their authorization will not allow them to work in Spain.

What happens when I finish my studies? Do I have to leave?

Not necessarily. Spain wants to retain talent. When you finish, you have several options: request an extension if you continue studying, apply for a Job Search Residence (for 12 months), or directly modify to a Work Permit if you have a job offer or want to start a business.

Do I need criminal records for this application?

Yes. If you're of legal age, you must provide a criminal record certificate from your country of origin (or from countries where you've resided in the last 5 years), duly legalized or apostilled and translated. It's one of the most important documents in the file.
